Bob was sent to Fort Dix, NJ for induction into the US Army. He arrived there by bus from his home in Trenton, NJ. Once he had gotten his orders of when to report, he had taken some time off and gone to Boston by train to see Jean. So the letters resume on July 3rd from Fort Dix.

He writes about sending her money for the savings account. They had opened the account before he left for Fort Dix and he made deposits faithfully every pay day. For spending money, he played poker. Later, he turned to Blackjack and Craps. For his entire life, he would set a budget of how much he was willing to lose at gambling and then go play to have good time. In the Army, he played for spending money, since he was sending most of the money home to her.

Many years later, when he was in Las Vegas on business, he played for Blackjack for an entire evening, but only using about $20. At one point in the evening, he had built his winnings up to a rather handsome sum, but by the end of the evening, he had lost it all. But as he explained to my mother, as long as he was playing, the food and drink kept coming, and he really only lost $20, because the other sum wasn't really his to begin with.
