He uses Kent. as an abbreviation for Kentucky. These letters were written before the post office created two initial abbreviations for each state. Bob was raised a Methodist. He read the Bible from cover to cover at least twice. When we lived in New Jersey, we attended the same church where he had gone as a kid- the Pearson Memorial Methodist Church. In December of 1953, my mother, who was raised as a Christian Scientist, my sister and I were all baptized in that church. When we were young, Dad tried to follow thru on his idea of going to church a few times a month, but when he started working as a Manufacturer's Representative and travelled every week, all week, he needed to sleep on Sundays. He always said that if they would have church at 5pm on Sundays, he'd go. He refers to the concern of being in this area in the summer, that he is concerned getting about malaria. Malaria is carried by mosquitoes. This was before there was wide spread spraying for mosquitoes and before there were effective malaria treating medications. At that time, all they had were medications to help reduce some of the symptoms. Malaria could be fatal. |
